Material from before the mid-term:
Although you will not be questioned directly
on material from before the mid-term, it is important that you have an
understanding of things like models of social welfare (residual, etc.)
and ideas about need and poverty.
Readings
The exam will assume students have read the following:
All readings in the book of readings, although
no direct questions from the first three readings (Ideology, Eugenics,
and Need)
Chapter 3 to 6 in Structural Social Work, plus
the pages in Chapter 7 on feminism and post-modernism.
Elements of Ideology (very important)
In addition, students will be expected to know
and be able to identify the elements of ideology as discussed in class
and which were also covered to some extent in the Mullaly book (see the
chart distributed at the start of term which shows the connections between
Mullalys beliefs and our elements). The means recognizing both the element
and how it is defined by each ideological perspective.
As each ideology was introduced in class over
the past few weeks, there was discussion about certain key ideas, thinkers,
etc. which helped to put into perspective the major thoughts and themes
of each ideology. An example of this might be Bentham, Keynes, Malthus
etc. Mullaly does a similar thing at the start of each of chapters 3 through
6. Specific dates and/or major published works will not be the subject
of questions (i.e. I WONT ask something like who wrote the General Theory
of Employment, Interest and Money [Keynes], NOR will I ask where Bentham
is now [University College London]) However, it is important to know about,
for example, Keynes idea that government regulation of the economy is okay
for capitalism, and that Bentham was interested in something called utilitarianism
and how that idea has an impact on current thinking about the welfare state.
Questions will be both short answer and essay (as in the mid-term). You will be asked to identify elements of ideology from passages of text (which will be supplied) and indicate to which ideological perspective(s) you think it belongs. Essay questions will be based on a recent article which addresses an issue related to social welfare and values/ideology
