Lichen Flora of Manitoba

This list represents some of the lichens that may be found in Manitoba, Canada. The existance of the lichens is based on notations in some North American keys, observations, and some personal collections. This list is not expected to be complete and there are likely some incorrect identifications and errors. I have not had a chance to check for synonymous names between different sources so there may be duplicates. A more upto date, and maintained, list can be found at the Cryptogamic Herbarium (UofM WIN). There is also a list, provided at the bottom left, that comes from a set of checklists of lichens and lichenicolous fungi elsewhere available on the WWW.

The lichens are presented here arranged by genus in alphabetic order. A classification by family groups based on the lichen forming fungi can be found at the end of 'Lichens of North America' (Brodo, Sharnoff and Sharnoff, 2001). Most keys separate lichens into crustose, squamulose, fruticose and foliose lichens. These are not generally phylogentic groups but are used when keying lichens for convenience. In the list I have provided here, after each genus name, there is an indication of the form that the genus generally takes (C, S, Fr, Fo).

A flora of the vascular plants of Manitoba is also available at home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~burchil/plants. Another flora of mosses and liverworts is available at home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~burchil/plants/mosses
