Phylogeny
To construct a tree showing the similarity or dissimilarity relationships among sequences
-
Determine
the number of ortholgous groups within a multigene familiy
-
Determine
evolutionary history of a gene family
-
Determine
evolutionary relationships among species or populations
Constructing Phylogenetic Trees
Efficiency
- distance methods: O(n)
- parsimony O(nk)
- exhaustive (eg. ML): O(n!)
Unfortunately,
ML (and more recent Bayesian methods) are the only ones that give a good
statistical basis for comparison of trees.
