BIRCH
For
end users:
- Includes major freeware packages (eg. NCBI,
Phylip,primer3,TCOFFEE etc.)
- most programs launched from specialized interfaces based on
GDE [6,7]
- GDE - sequence data
- dGDE - list data (eg. ACCESSION, GI, TAXID numbers)
- mGDE - molecular marker data (eg. AFLP)
- tGDE - phylogenetic tree data
- Locally-installed programs and databases can be added to
GDE transparently, without re-compiling.
- All documentation is unified in a single Web hierarchy.
- Tutorials are task-oriented, rather than program-oriented.
For
the sysadmin:
- Install
wizard automates installation, configuration and updates.
- Local
customizations automatically re-integrated into BIRCH during updates.
- Central
configuration: everything works the same for all users.
-
OS-independent datafiles, documentation and scripts are installed
separately from OS-dependent binaries. At login, BIRCH automatically
finds the correct binaries (eg. Solaris-Sparc, Solaris-AMD64,
Linux-Intel)
- Scaleable
from a single PC to a campus-wide system
