Ugly But Not Inferior explores the body, mind and spirit and attempts to reconcile these social constructs. Performed at LACE in Los Angeles for the Multifarious Behavior Project.
There were 3 parts to the performance, accompanied by projected text and video projection: Approaching, Contemplating, and Biting Through. During Biting Through I went into the audience and invited audience members to participate in a communal eucharist ritual.
With notions of Chaos Theory; specifically those ideas that refer to radical and instantaneous changes of state as described by Thomas McEvilley in Art on the Edge and Over (1996), UGLY BUT NOT INFERIOR deconstructs itself into internal irreconcilability; resistant to traditional ideas of coherence or meaning, seeking out that lack of meaning with both visual, performative and textual elements which nullify and contradict each other and themselves. UGLY's inner contradictions point to the unavailability of certainty about anything. All thoughts are valid. The only true sin is a lack of love, mercy and compassion. The angel resists attempts to universalize and canonize dogmas; a practice that has contributed to a world of suffering, violence and cruelty.
