Neuroimmune Biology (NIB) marks the beginning of a new scientific discipline, and is presented in a new book series. This series will collect, organize, co-ordinate, integrate and interpret the knowledge that is rapidly accumulating in biology regarding the physiology and pathophysiology of higher organisms. It is now apparent that the Nervous, Endocrine, and Immune systems form a regulatory network, which is fundamental for the entire life cycle of man and of higher animals, both in health and disease. The organization and interpretation of knowledge concerning this regulatory system is important for a better understanding of higher organisms in their entire complexity.
NIB holds the promise of developing better approaches for the prevention and cure of human and animal diseases and for the development of better methods for the management of biological systems.

Neuroimmune Biology is a series that is set up in a special way. With 3 volumes being published each year it can be used as a comprehensive reference work keeping scientists up to date. Each volume covers all aspects of a certain area of Neuroimmune Biology and can thus be used stand-alone.

A three issue per year multidisciplinary series, NeuroImmune Biology presents reviews and theoretical papers in relation to the involvement of the neuroendocrine and immune system in physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms. Emphasis will be given to network interactions of neuroendocrine and immune systems with each other and with other organs and tissues in the body. The goal is to understand physiological and pathophysiological pathways and regulatory circuits in their complexity as they occur in vivo.
Some of the more prominent topics are:
  • developmental significance;
  • specific adaptive immune reactions;
  • innate or natural immunity;
  • the inflammatory response;
  • the acute phase response;
  • due to abnormal immunoregulation (e.g. allergy, autoimmune disease, hypersensitivity conditions, asthma, etc.);
  • the regulation of various organs and tissues jointly by hormones, neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, and by immune derived mediators (cytokines);
  • stromal immunocytes as regulators (e.g. macrophages, T and B lymphocytes and regulated cell types);
  • immunoregulation by neurotransmitters and neuropeptides;

  • the significance of neuroimmune mechanisms in normal physiology, regeneration and healing, in reproduction biology, and so on.
