Learning
APA Style Through Web-Based Computer-Aided Personalized System of
Instruction (WebCAPSI)
Consider the
following problems:
Problem
1: You want your students to learn the content of the Publication
Manual of the American Psychological Association but you cannot
spend enough time within the context of another course (e.g., Research
Methods, Senior Seminar) to teach it.
Problem 2: You tried teaching
your students APA style but were dissatisfied with what they learned.
Problem 3:
You find it boring to lecture about APA style and your students
probably find it equally boring to listen to these lectures.
Problem 4:
Your teaching assistants or lab instructors are frustrated with
how little students care or learn about APA style.
Problem 5:
You and your teaching assistants are tired of grading papers that
suggest the students did not read or did not understand the Publication
Manual.
Problem 6:
Your colleagues who teach advanced courses ask you, Werent
the students in my course supposed to learn APA style in your
course?
Now consider
a solution: Using WebCAPSI to help students learn APA style.
WebCAPSI provides
the structure and reason for students to read and to learn the content
of the Publication Manual by requiring them to answer more than
250 short-essay questions in 10 units covering all chapters of the
latest edition of the Publication Manual. Students can work through
the material at their own pace, check their understanding of APA
style, practice writing in accordance with the suggestions in the
manual, and enhance their learning by serving as peer reviewers
of other students work.

WebCAPSI
has been used for years to teach a variety of subjects such
as behavior modification, history and systems of psychology,
educational psychology, learning, psychological statistics,
research methods, sport psychology, the basics of writing,
and APA style. The cost of using WebCAPSI is less than what
students typically pay for study guides or access to online
resources, including the APAs online course (Mastering
the Sixth Edition). Moreover, WebCAPSIs success
has been empirically demonstrated.
