Africa's New Frontier: Innovation, Technology and Properity Conference
Organized by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the IDRC
Fairmont Château Laurier Hotel, Ottawa Ontario
February 4–5, 2010
In the 21st century, Africa is emerging as a dynamic and innovative continent. This new Africa boasts a reservoir of young talent, a growing market for cutting-edge technologies, and a source of fresh ideas. New technologies allow entrepreneurs, educators, and health specialists to overcome the old barriers of distance and borders. Citizens and journalists are using innovative tools to hold their public officials accountable. And new practices are resulting in growing agricultural exports and greater food security on the continent. Despite its well-publicized challenges, Africa is a continent of exciting possibilities.
This conference aims to enrich our conversation about Africa, highlighting good news stories from Africa, and drawing on lessons learned, projecting trends, and focusing on the many ways in which Canada–Africa relations support innovation on the continent.

2009 CEA Meetings in Toronto
Thanks to everyone that participated in the CDESG sessions at this year's CEA conference in Toronto. Talan Iscan, Sonia Laszlo, Gustavo Bobonis, Teddy Samy, and Katrina Harris deserve special thanks for all their work this year with the CDESG and this year's meetings. We had a very successful meeting, in large part due to their efforts! We organized 6 CDESG sessions, 10 regular development sessions, 1 policy panel, and hosted Jeffrey Williamson (Harvard) as our keynote speaker. A summ.ary of the events can be found here.
We are also pleased to announce that the Albert Berry Prize winner for best paper by a junior scholar in the CDESG sessions went to Kim Lehrer (UBC) for her paper Gender Differences in Labour Market Participation During Conflict: Evidence from Displaced People's Camps in Northern Uganda . Last year's winner was Luisito Bertinelli (University of Luxembourg) for his paper Trends in Rainfall and Economic Growth in Africa: A Neglected Cause of the African Growth Tragedy. This paper was recently published by the Review of Economics and Statistics . We are sure Kim's paper will meet with similar success!
Lastly, we would like to thank Edgard Rodriguez and the International Development Research Centre for their support of our CEA activities!
