Annotation: Phc and mss. copy of seven poems published in the Munich journal
Die Freistatt, Aug. (2) & Oct. (3), 1904, and Mar. (2), 1905. -- In typescript,
from Greve/Grove Poetry Edition, pp.40-48, with 4 facsims, pp.49a&b. -- Greve
claims authorship for this poetry cycle in his letter to Gide (17.10.1904); but
since Else von Freytag-Loringhoven's poem "Du" (ca. 1924; facsim.) in Maryland
is clearly a shortened version of the seventh poem by Fanny Essler [Mar. 1905],
her collaboration is certain. Also, her poem "Schalk" [ca. 1923/24; facsim.]
is a an expansion of the central three Fanny Essler sonnets [Oct.1904]: to the
three details of Else's lover Greve -- his [cold] eyes, [brutal] hands, and [lying]
mouth -- she has added other unflattering attributes, like his heart of stone.
Thie reflects her bitterness of Greve's abandonment of her in Sparta, Kentucky,
in 1911/12.
The National Library of Canada has established the name "Fanny Essler" which
is also the title of Greve's novel about Else's life in 1905,as a joint pseudonym
for her and Greve in 1993.
