How do I transfer my Netscape Messenger addressbook to Webmail?

This document describes the procedure for transferring a Netscape Messenger (7+) addressbook to the U of M Webmail client (IMP). A small amount of modification must be done in order to this work properly.

Export your Netscape Messenger addressbook

  • Start Netscape Messenger.
  • Once Messenger is open click Window then Address Book.
  • This will bring up the Address Book.
  • Click on the Address book you want to Export and then click on Tools and click Export.
  • Choose a filename and location on your computer.
  • To save as a Comma Separated Values file where it says Save as Type, pick CSV.
  • Click on Save.

Import the addresses into Webmail

  • Login to Webmail at webmail.cc.umanitoba.ca.
  • Click Addressbook.
  • Click Import/Export.
  • Ensure there is not a checkmark beside If importing CSV data: does the first row contain the field names?
  • Choose CSV as the format to import from.
  • Click Browse to browse to the file that you exported from Outlook Express.
  • Click Open, and then Import the file.
  • Match the fields in the exported addresses with Webmail addressbook fields. For each field you wish to import, select one Imported and one Available field, and click Add pair.
  • *Note* Imp only has 1 field for name, so you may wish to match it with the display name.
  • Once you have finished matching Netscape Messenger fields to Webmail ones, click Import.

If you encounter any problems after importing your addressbook file, there is a tool available for clearing your Webmail addresses. Keep in mind, however, that ALL of your addresses will be removed by this tool. The tool may be found at:
