When I print something to
the Epsons in Machray Hall the printer looks like it's printing but
nothing comes out. How can I fix this?
Last updated: 29-July-2003
Some applications cause the print heads to retract while printing.
There's a special procedure that needs to be followed to reset the printer's
RAM.
- Turn the printer OFF.
- Turn the printer ON while holding down the following buttons found
on the front of the printer:
- Front/Rear paper load
- Down on the micro feed
- Line Feed
- Turn printer OFF (again).
- Turn printer back ON (no buttons to push this time).
Current evidence suggests that this is caused by some Chemistry notes
in an unusual format with a different type of embedded graphics that
students try to print out.
How do I change the paper
and align it on the Epson printers?
Last updated: 29-July-2003
There's two methods needed depending on whether you want to just align
the paper, or you need to load and align it.
Loading and Aligning Paper
- Take the printer offline by using the Online button (the
green light underneath it will go out). You may need to wait for it
to stop printing before you do this.
- Lift the top hood and check that the ribbon in the printer is still
in working order. If it's damaged then take the printer offline and
report it to the Trouble Desk at 474-8484 using one of the open area
phones.
- With the top hood still open, ensure that there aren't any paper
jams or leftover tractor paper strips still stuck inside. Close the
hood once you're done.
- Lift the front bottom hood. You should see two tractor feeds. Lift
their tabs.
- Check the top of the paper that you're going to feed into the printer.
If the tractor feed strips are torn or not connected to the paper,
or the paper isn't a whole piece, tear that page off so you're starting
with a fresh page. Insert and line up the paper with the tractor strips,
and close the tabs and the hood once you're done.
- Click on the Load button. The paper should be loaded and
automatically aligned. Click the Online button once more to
ready the printer for printing (the light underneath should now be
lit).
Aligning Paper
- Take the printer offline by using the Online button (the
green light underneath it will go out). You may need to wait for it
to stop printing before you do this.
- On the right hand side of the printer is a picture showing where
the paper is loaded in from. Underneath is a button that when pressed
will begin to unload paper from the printer. Press this several times
until the printer says it's out of paper.
- At this point the printer should say it's expecting to load in paper
from the other direction (the lights will change on the picture) and
your paper should be unloaded. Check the top of the page to ensure
that it's a whole page (otherwise the alignment will be off again).
- Press the paper load direction button one more time. This should
cause the printer to reload the paper and align properly.
- Press the Online button once more to ready the printer for
printing (the light underneath should now be lit).
Is it possible to ftp to sites
other than The University of Manitoba, from the ACN labs?
Last updated: 29-July-2003
The answer to this question depends upon which platform you wish to
use.
PC or Mac:
FTP traffic is not possible outside of the umanitoba.ca domain.
The microcomputers in the ACN labs are not connected directly to the
Internet. They contact the outside world through a proxy server (proxy.cc.umanitoba.ca).
The only type of traffic that is let through this proxy server is http.
Other traffic (e.g. telnet, Napster) is not possible outside of our
domain.
Unix:
FTP beyond the umanitoba.ca domain is possible.
How do I BACKUP my files
using the lab computers?
Last updated: 15-Aug-2003
Copying files to your unix account
From the computers in the labs you can send a copy of your files to your
unix account. To do this you will have to use one of the ftp programs
available on the machines.

Copying files to another disk
ACN suggests that you have three copies of your disk at all times,
two to carry with you and one to keep at home. This will help prevent
any data loss as you will always have two remaining disks with your
files on them.
Method 1: Copying from a floppy disk to the computer to another
floppy disk
- Open My Computer and open the A drive.
- Select the files that you wish to copy and select Edit and
copy.
- Try to open up the G drive (ramdrive) or the H drive and select
Edit and paste. (This will put a copy of the files onto
the computer.)
- You can now place the other disk into the computer and copy the
files back.
- Select your files from the G drive, select Edit and copy.
- Open the window that shows the A drive and select Edit and
paste.
Now you have a copy of the files on your other disk.
You should also delete the files from the G drive so that no one else
can use them - this will be done automatically when the computer is
restarted or you can manually delete the files.
Method 2: Copying from one floppy disk straight to another floppy
disk
- Open My Computer.
- Highlight the A: drive by left clicking on it.
- Click on File, then Copy Disk...
- In the Copy Disk... window, select 3 1/2 Floppy (A:)
on both the "Copy from" side and the "Copy to" side.
- Click on Start.
You will be prompted by the computer when to insert the second (blank)
floppy disk. After the process is complete, you will have a copy of your
files on both floppy disks.
Why can't I login at the
Drake lab?
Last updated: 29-July-2003
If you are an authorized user of the Drake computer lab, when you login
with a new INS password, you must pick a new password immediately. You
may also be shown a screen that asks you if you wish to coordinate the
workstation Windows NT password with this new one.
Click 'cancel' on that screen (changing the workstation password is
not permitted).
If you don't cancel out of this screen the password change won't go
through and you will have missed your single opportunity to login using
the new password. This means you will have to return to the Accounts
Manager in rm. 629 Engineering to receive another password.
How can I change the
keyboard settings to use another language (e.g. Arabic)?
Last updated: 29-July-2003
- Start Microsoft Word. A blue box with the letters "EN" will appear
down in the lower right corner of the task bar. This is called the
keyboard selector icon.
- Right click on it and select "Properties". A window called "Keyboard
Properties" will appear on-screen.
- Click on the Input Locales tab. The default input locale
is set as English (Canadian).
- Click the Add button. The "Add Input Locale" window will
appear.
- Click on the down arrow and choose the keyboard layout that you
would like.
- Select "OK" to close this window and add it as an input locale.
The "Keyboard Properties" window will now reflect your addition.
- Below the English (Canadian) input locale will be the one
you just added. Click on "OK" to close this window.
- Using the left mouse button this time, click on the keyboard selector
icon. You'll be able to choose the new keyboard layout. The keyboard
selector icon will change to match your new input locale. Typing in
Word will now reflect the new keyboard input.
As a courtesy, remember to change it back to English
when you are done.
Where can I find computers
with software to enlarge visual displays?
Last updated: 29-July-2003
Disability Services has a computer with software to enable enlarged
visual displays.
Disability Services can be contacted by calling 474-6213 or
emailing disability_services@umanitoba.ca.
All of the Libraries on campus that also have computer labs (e.g. Education,
Dafoe, Law) have Zoom Text installed (see Accessories.) For more
information, contact the LETS Desk at 474-7061.
What is the correct method
to eject my zip disk in ACN Labs?
Last updated: 29-July-2003
To eject your disks correctly, do not eject it using the hardware
button on the front of the drive. Instead:
- Open My Computer
- Click once on the zip disk icon.
- Click on the File pull-down menu.
- Select Eject
Why is this necessary?
Unfortunately, there is a problem with Iomega Zip drives on Windows
NT and 2000 machines that can result in data loss when the hardware
eject button is used. Iomega does not currently have a good solution
for this problem. Until then, the best method to avoid data loss is
to follow the steps in this FAQ.
For more information about the Iomega's problems, visit:

Can I print 11" x
17" documents on campus?
Last updated: 29-July-2003
The printers in the ACN Open Area labs print on letter-sized
(8 1/2" x 11") paper only.
It may be possible to print documents on other sizes of paper. This
will be dependent upon whether or not a printer is available and the
applicable software (e.g. AUTOCAD) is accessible.

I cannot
access my files created previously in AutoCAD®. An error message
says that my file is locked by the University of Manitoba, how do
I unlock it?
Last updated: 29-July-2003
You have to be in an AutoCAD® session to be able
to unlock files saved on your disk. Once you are in AutoCAD® go
on to the File menu, and go onto utilities under
Management. Click on lock files. In the dialogue box that
comes up click on the file that you wish to unlock and click OK.
Hints to avoid problems in AutoCAD®:
-
Always reboot the computer before you start working.
-
Make sure you have a new disk for each project
since AutoCAD® creates two back files for each original file
that you create and may result in a fatal error if you are in the
middle of saving a project.
-
Logon to your computer properly (if you are in one
of the open areas) if you fail to do so, AutoCAD® will come
up with an error message that says error loading file.
If this happens, AutoCAD® will start configuring its files and
will ask you to confingure many of the options. Read these options
carefully. Since one of these options is do you want to enable
file locking? hitting return for this error message will automatically
lock all your files on the current drive.
