My beliefs about teaching and learning are grounded in a sociocultural
perspective - I consider the relationship between teacher and student
primary in the learning process, value language as an important tool
for interaction and thinking, and believe that all learning is situated
in the context of culture.
It
has been a challenge to apply these beliefs to teaching in a university
setting. The limited time with students and the
discipline-specific programming makes it difficult to establish
meaningful relationships and create student-centred curricula.
However, I am open and responsive to encourage student expression
and input. I believe in teaching through experience, so
frequently use field trips or guest presenters to make the learning
more authentic. My emphasis is on teaching strategies - I want my
students to develop problem-solving skills, understand concepts, and be
reflective and analytical of their own and other's practice - rather
than simply memorizing information and facts. I work at building
a classroom community by ensuring that students have opportunities to
work together, by being culturally sensitive and relevant, and by
establishing open dialogue. I frequently change my approach or my
activities because I see teaching as an evolving process.
