Scroll through one of the EST lists below, and choose a DNA sequence at
random.
Create a working directory (folder) to hold the files you create as you
work. In MS-Windows, this can be done in the file manager.
For organizational purposes, make the name of the directory the same as
the name of the sequence (eg. AA009306). Keep the file manager open on
your desktop.
Open up a text editor (eg. Notepad or Wordpad ), and keep it in a
separate window. This will hold your DNA sequence. (see sample.dna)
Select the sequence by dragging the cursor across the nucleotides (eg.
a,g,c,t), until the entire sequence is highlighted. Choose EDIT -->
Copy to copy the sequence to the Web browser's clipboard. (You don't
need to copy the name).
Move to the text editor, and choose EDIT --> Paste. Save this
text in a file by choosing File --> Save As. Call this file "dna".
EST lists
Each file contains a number of DNA sequences, each beginning
with a name (eg. >AA009306) followed by several lines of nucleotide sequence.
