EXERCISE: LINEAR VS. CIRCULAR REPLICATION

1) The replication of a circular chromosome is illustrated below in early and late stages of replication. Using arrows to indicate the direction of chain elongation, draw in the leading and lagging strands, such that the lagging strand contains 2 or 3 Okazaki fragments. In the later stage, you can assume that the primers have been removed and nicks sealed from the DNA that was synthesized in the early stages.

2) One end of a linear chromosome is illustrated below. Draw in the primers and newly synthesized strands that would be produced during a round of DNA replicating strands. Label 5' and 3' ends.

Now show how the duplex derived from strand c would replicate in the next cell cycle.
