Hints for Completing the "Big" Question Inquiry Unit
- Opener needs to be a lesson that excites students, gets them questioning their ideas, raise doubt in their mind, gets them curious, and even better comes from their interests and discussions. You need to introduce the big question to studentsin the first few lessons.
- Culminating Activity has to allow each student to answer the “big” Question and could also include a group presentation / Discussion / Debate
- Absolutely no Quiz or Test as culminating event
- Need approximately 10 lessons (More is fine)
- Assessment Plan needs
- List of possible assessment activities
- A rubric of the Culminating Activity (Other rubrics are optional)
- At least one checklist for your collection of observations of student achievement / demonstrations of learning
- Include the best guess for total time needed to complete the Unit and for each lesson
- One page or so Reflection Paper on the process of unit planning
- Include Pink Colored Collegial Feedback Sheet
- Includes at least one Retrieval Chart (Student research data collection)
- Some integration of the social sciences and / or other subjects is helpful
