HOW CAN
YOUR CHILD PARTICIPATE? |
|
|
Sometimes our sessions are conducted at schools. Some
sessions are conducted in our child-friendly lab at the
University of Manitoba. For these sessions, we provide
parents with a parking pass while they visit us. We also
provide child participants with a prize to thank them
for their contribution to science. We only work with
children once we have received consent from both you and
your child. Children are free to stop participating at
any time. All of our studies have received ethical
approval from the University of Manitoba.

CURRENT RESEARCH

Children’s
Understanding of Sarcasm
Through Intonation Variation |
|
|
|
During communication children may encounter statements
that do not reflect events occurring at that particular
time. While there are numerous cues available to begin
to interpret meaning of such statements, prior research
has found children as young as 5 years of age tend to
focus on the use of sarcastic intonation in detecting |
|
sarcasm. We are interested in children’s
ability to attend to sarcastic intonation, characterized
by variations in pitch, in understanding sarcasm. In
this study, we present children with video clips of
puppets speaking using various intonations. Children
will be asked to questions about the speaker puppets’
belief and intentions.
We are currently seeking 5- to 8-year-old children to
participate in this study. |

Theory of Mind
Understanding in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD) |
|
 |
|
Our daily interactions require us to think about the
thoughts and beliefs of other people. Researchers call
this ability a “theory of mind” and they have shown that
this ability is linked to the development of social
skills and communication skills. We use a short story
book reading as a method and |
|
younger children can, if they wish, remain seated on
their parent’s lap during the entire session.
We are currently recruiting typically developing boys
and children with ASD of any age to participate in this
study. |
