Biography
A native of Sudbury, Ontario, Dr. Hannila received her Bachelor of
Science degree in Life Sciences from Queen’s University. She then
completed her PhD in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology
at Queen’s University under the supervision of Dr. Michael Kawaja.
Prior to joining the University of Manitoba, Dr. Hannila worked as a
postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Marie T. Filbin at Hunter
College in New York City. Her research focuses on the neurobiology
of axonal regeneration in the central nervous system, with the goal
of developing new treatments for spinal cord injury. She also
studies the role of a protein called secretory leukocyte protease
inhibitor in neural and vascular development.
