Summer Workshop in Mathematics 2020

Summer Workshop in Mathematics

July 13 -- August 7, 2020

Introduction

The Summer Workshop in Mathematics is an initiative of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Manitoba.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the format has change to a four week online workshop. There will be approximately 2 hours of lectures per day during which there will be discussion, examples, and lectures around the content. As well, there will be some periodic discussion (led by an experienced high school mathematics teacher) designed to generate ideas for classroom activities, puzzles, and games, and to solicit feedback on the challenges of various topics

Participants will improve their problem solving and reasoning skills as well as learn about mathematics proofs and the foundations of mathematics.

The workshop will run from 10am--12pm, Monday--Friday (except Monday, August 3rd)

Funding

As a four week workshop is a significant time commitment, on top of professional development, participants will receive a $500 stipend.

Intended Audience

The intended audience is early and middle years teachers seeking to enhance their skills and background in mathematics.

Applying to the Workshop

The workshop is restricted to at most 30 participants. As such we are asking potential participants to submit a short (no more than one page) letter describing
  • What experience do you have with teaching mathematics and what grade level(s)?
  • Why do you want to participate in the workshop?
  • What do you hope to get out of the workshop?
All applicants will be informed in mid-June as to their registration status. However, registrations will continue to be accepted after that date.

Please email your intention to participate in the workshops by emailing the letter to Dr. Nicholas Harland:
