Cahoon is a Fellow of The American Society for Metals and has been very active in micro-gravity research for over 10 years. He has made important breakthroughs in understanding solidification and liquid diffusion in micro-gravity environments on the MIR space station, space shuttles, sounding rockets, and parabolic aircraft flights. His research on the chemistry of materials solidified in micro-gravity will use ESCA/Auger, SIMS and SPM and will help determine the viability of processing of materials (such as repair welding of structures) stationed in outer space.
