Hawthorne was listed by Science Watch as the third most cited Geologist of the decade 1991-2001 and is recognized as a world leader in his field. He holds a Tier 1 CRC in Crystallography and Mineralogy, a member of the Royal Society of Canada and a Distinguished Professor. He has received numerous medals and awards for his experimental and theoretical work on the crystal chemistry of minerals. He will use ESCA/Auger, SIMS and SPM to investigate the mechanism and role of short-range ordering and light lithophile elements in minerals, which has important implications for our understanding of the conditions of crystallization of minerals.
