Research Thrusts

Surfaces and ultrathin films. Emerging technologies ranging from molecular electronics to high-throughput-analytical techniques in proteomics will be based on engineering of the chemistry, structure and electronic properties of surfaces, molecular monolayers and polymer thin-films. Sensitive techniques that can be used to elucidate the precise spatial elemental makeup and bonding at surfaces are absolutely essential for researchers to drive the growth in these areas.

Interfaces within materials. Interfacial composition and structure play a major role in the bulk properties of materials and impact their eventual use. In order to understand and manipulate this important aspect of materials, researchers must have tools that characterize the morphology, chemical composition, structure and bonding at interfaces both at surfaces and within the bulk.
