This page collects some utilities which are used to store the dynamic IP address of a SLIP or PPP session in the DOS environment. Once stored in an environment variable, the address can be used to automatically configure various network applications.
IPRARP gets the IP address directly from a class 1 packet driver interface supporting RARP (such as Merit Network's EtherPPP, or the PPPPKT shim). This method will not work with typical SLIP drivers.
IPREAD `reads' or `grabs' the IP address directly off the screen and so should be run right after dialing in. This method, although clumsy, is more universal: it will work with SLIP and does not require a Class 1 packet driver.
Taken together, the utilities IPRARP v0.20 and IPREAD v0.15 form the package
There are two other programs of a similar nature that I know of:
Branch to Nigel Gorry's page of links to SLIP and PPP packet drivers for DOS, related utilities, TCP/IP applications and tutorial information.
Branch to Jeff Hayes' DOS internet page. Lots of information and advice about setting up SLIP and PPP packet drivers, and links to applications.
