How to Configure z39.50 Internet Access to

UM Catalogue (BISON) &

NETDOC (Silver Platter - WebSPIRS) Databases

at the University of Manitoba

Instructions below are for Reference Manager version 9.5 .
Reference Manager 9 is very similar except you do not need to complete a DATABASE PROPERTIES table.
Endnote and Procite are also configured somewhat similarly.

• click on Reference Manager top menu bar REFERENCES / INTERNET SEARCH
  
  
• in RETRIEVAL Window: change from PubMed to Z39.50 sites
• click on HOSTS ICON § click on CONFIGURE HOSTS (bottom of screen)
  
  
  
  
• click on NEW HOST (right of screen) or PROPERTIES (to modify an existing host)
• fill in the HOST PROPERTIES window as below
• then click on OK (bottom of Host Properties Window)

A DATABASE PROPERTIES window will appear. Fill in as described below for each database you wish to access.

• Each database will become an option under the general host name e.g. University of Manitoba ERL.
• If you enter data for only one database you can choose to add others later.
  • Click on the NEW DATABASES button in the CONFIGURATION window.
  • Make sure the new database is created under the proper University of Manitoba ERL host.
    
    

   

Example DATABASE PROPERTIES below is for MEDLINE.

• Use other Database Names for other databases using table 1.
• Note Format is SPMARC.
• Field Names/Types/Use may vary with the database.
• E.g. Keywords field 25 is for MESH subject headings only. See table 2.
  
  

• Test your host configuration by clicking on TEST HOST in your Configure Hosts Window.
  
  
• Test your database access by filling in the Reference Manager REFERENCES / INTERNET SEARCH / Z39.50 sites, Retrieval Window.
  

	Fill in the FIELD column by pressing F3[browse] or click on the 123 icon
	Fill in the PARAMETER column with search terms.
	Move to next row and fill in the connector column using AND, OR as needed or click on icon
	Make sure the HOST and DATABASE is selected by clicking on the globe icon and marking the desired HOST/DATABASE. E.g. University of Manitoba ERL / Medline (MEDS*)
	Initiate the search by pressing F12 [start retrieval] or click on the binoculars icon.
	If successful, results will be retrieved into a Reference Manager "Search#" folder for each search that you complete. You can then copy all or marked citations into an existing database using the REFERENCES / COPY BETWEEN DATABASES option.
	Your Z39.50 host and database configuration is stored in the BkwrAPI.z39 file in the Reference Manager's BkwrAPI folder. To share your setup with another computer or other U of M RM users you can copy this file to the user's BkwrAPI folder.
