DR. ARNOLD NAIMARK



Arnold Naimark, O.C., M.D., B.Sc.(Med), M.Sc. LL.D, F.R.C.P.(C), F.R.S.C., was born in Winnipeg in 1933 and attended St. John's High School before enrolling in the University of Manitoba in 1950. There he had a brilliant career, earning the M.D. and B.Sc.(Med) in 1957, and the M.Sc. In 1959. He pursued advanced study in Manitoba, at the University of California (San Francisco) and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School (London) before returning to the University of Manitoba in 1963 as Assistant Professor of Physiology. He was named Head of Physiology and Professor of Medicine and Physiology (1966) and Dean of Medicine (1971), before being appointed President and Vice-Chancellor in 1981, a post which he occupied with distinction until 1996.

A medical, academic and community leader, he was President of the Canadian Physiological Society (1971-72), the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation (1971-73), the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges (1975-76) the Council of Western Canadian University Presidents (1985-89) Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (1987-89), Chairman of the North Portage Development Corporation (1983-1993), the Association of Commonwealth Universities (1988-89), and an influential figure in numerous other local, national and international bodies.

Dr. Naimark is currently Professor of Medicine and Physiology at the University of Manitoba, Director of the Centre for the Advancement of Medicine, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Health Services Foundation, Principal of the Naimark Consulting Group and a director of several private and public sector enterprises.

His many honors include the Sir Arthur Sims Traveling Fellowship (1976), several honorary lectureships, the Distinguished Service Award of Ben Gurion University (1981), honorary doctorates from Mt. Allison University (1986) and the University of Toronto (1997), election to the Royal Society of Canada (1987), appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada (1987), the G. Malcolm Brown Award (1987), the Osler Award (1994) and the Symons Award (1998).
