Oct 7th 2010: Getbirch installer alpha release.

Getbirch installer
v0.9alpa

Getbirch is a new BIRCH feature designed to make installing BIRCH simpler.
  • Features:
    • Network install:
      • Automatically install the most recent version of BIRCH
      • Optionally, install the current Development version of BIRCH (note that this is experimental code)
      • Optionally, install a miniBirch system (if a master BIRCH site already exists)
      • Small, lightweight executable
    • Disc install:
      • Offline installation of BIRCH
      • One disc installs BIRCH on any supported platform
      • Ideal for installing BIRCH on many systems, minimize bandwidth
    • Common:
      • Double clickable, no commandline necessary (provided Java MIME typing is enabled)
      • Default or advanced install options
      • Automatically detect system type, automatic selection of binaries
      • Select installation directory (clobbering of existing installation prevented)
      • Create install log to home directory (or directory of choice)

Installation Instructions:

  1. Download either the Network or the Install Disc
    1. If you downloaded the Install Disc image, you must burn it to a CD/DVD rom
      1. OS-X: Use Disc Utility to select the downloaded image (getbirch.iso) and burn it to a disc
      2. Linux: There are many options, I recommend a GUI tool like Brasero
      3. Solaris: You may need to use the command line
        1. cdrecord -scanbus  (to get the CD/DVD writer device name), use in place of 0,0,0 below
        2. cdrecord -dev=0,0,0 /path/to/downloaded/getbirch.iso
    2. If you downloaded the network installer, you should be able to launch it directly through your web browser by clicking on it in the download manager.
  2. Launch the installer "getbirch.jar"
    1. Disc install:
      1. Navigate to the the CD in your file manager (in most cases it will pop up automatically)
    2. Doube-click or right-click on the file "getbirch.jar", and launch it using java (this varies from system to system, see below)
System Requirements:
  1. You must have the BIRCH dependencies installer:
    1. Java Runtime Environment, version 5 or newer (6 is preferred!)
    2. Python 2.4 or newer (newer preferred!)
    3. Csh/Tcsh intalled
