******************* * * * Screen Layout * * * ******************* Upper Third ----------- The top 1/3 of of the screen contains three regions; from left to right: Commands Region, Status Region, Image Information Region. The Commands Region consists of a single column-menu of commands to the far left; except for the "Help" and "Exit" commands, selection of any command will fill the area to the right of the menu with a sub-menu of commands related to the command chosen from the mail menu. The Status Region, in the middle, displays meaningful results and reports problems or errors. The Image Information Region displays documentary information related to the image being analyzed or viewed. Some fields may be edited by the user. Bottom Two-Thirds ----------------- The lower 2/3 of the screen is for display of the primary image, display of supporting or comparative images, profile graphs, a window showing a magnified fractional portion of the primary image, a colorbar, and a color-adjustments menu. The primary image is displayed in the largest rectangular area, left center. Above the primary image rectangular area are displayed lane ID labels. To the left are displayed row-pixel index numbers and tic marks and, in a different color, base-pair fragment sizes. To the right of the image is a vertical scroll bar used for fragment-size editing. After the primary image has been cropped, there appear above the crop box two or three colored stripes, each containing some coded text. Each of these stripes relates to the lanes of the image; and the codes are read vertically, each column referring to the lane below (if the cropped image is close to the top of the image space, these stripes may appear below the crop box). The blue stripe contains lane-index numbers which begin with 0 at the left and increment to the right. The green stripe contains lane IDs which are specified in the selected gel-format file. Only the last 2 characters of any lane ID are shown. While the blue and green stripes are shown for all images, a red stripe is shown only when inheritance is active; then, the red stripe shows inheritance codes from the gel-format file. Above the vertical scroll bar are three colored buttons: Red -- red button pops a window which displays the cropped image magnified 2X; it is turned off simply by clicking in the magnified window. Blue -- the blue button is a 3-state toggle for stripe-windows which appear at the top or bottom of the crop box portion of the image once lanes have been identified; the three states are stripes above, stripes below, stripes off. Magenta -- the magenta button applies only when inheritance is active; it is a 3-way toggle: (1) red marker bands, green experimental bands; (2) red marker bands off, experimental bands color coded by allele, a window to the left of the image containing allele colors and sizes. (3) same as (2) but window is to the right of the image. To the upper right of the vertical scroll bar is a square window in which is displayed a magnified portion of the primary image. The 200x200 window covers a 100x100 portion of the primary image determined by the location of the pointer within the primary image. Magnification is 2X. Below the magnified window is a colorbar; to the right of the colorbar is a menu of buttons and scroll bars for making adjustments to the installed color table.
