The mRNA encoding polypeptide 15 of the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein complex is translated on free cytoplasmic polysomes as a larger precursor, which is imported post-translationally into chloroplasts by an ATP-dependent process. The precursor chain extension (transit sequence) is thought to function in the post-translational translocation across the chloroplast envelope.
