Course Title:   "Quantum Chemistry II"

Purpose/ Scope:
This is a 4th‐year course covering advanced topics in quantum chemistry. It builds directly on CHEM3360. The focus is on topics relevant to spectroscopy and, more generally, to chemistry.

Tentative Course Outline:
At the current time, I plan to cover the following topics. (Still subject to change and/ or refinement.)
  1. Review of quantum chemistry 1 (CHEM3360) ‐ as needed
  2. Mathematical tools: (i) review of mathematical tools covered in CHEM3360 as needed (complex numbers, vector algebra, differential equations); (ii) matrix algebra
  3. Time-independent perturbation theory ‐ non-degenerate and degenerate perturbation theory; applications to chemical systems
  4. Time-dependent perturbation theory; applications to chemical systems
  5. Time permitting: general angular momentum
  6. Relativistic quantum mechanics, introduction
  7. Student-selected topics

Organization
The course will follow the traditional lecture format. A tutorial component will be covered, both, by assignments and problems and by in-class examples. I also plan to introduce a student-led component. There is no laboratory.

Prerequisites
CHEM3360 or permission of the instructor.

Feedback
I appreciate feedback (such as about the course or about the websites), both formal (such as through the course evaluations) and informal!
