Bio

Dr. Qiuyan Yuan joined the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Manitoba in July of 2013 as an assistant professor. She earned her PhD degree from the University of Manitoba .

Dr. Yuan has over 10 years of research and development experience in sustainable nutrient removal and recovery processes applied to wastewater and biosolids. Since 2014, her research areas have expanded to include solid waste treatment and management. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba, she was a process specialist at Stantec Consulting Inc.

She was the recipient of the University of Manitoba Merit Award for Research, Scholarly Work & Other Creative Activities in 2018, and the Terry G. Falconer Memorial Rh Institute Foundation Emerging Researcher Award in 2019.

Research interests

Dr. Yuan's interests cover a variety of environmental engineering topics, with the primary research area being nutrient removal and recovery. She is particularly interested in the technological implementation of biological phosphorus removal and chemical phosphorus recovery. She is also interested in leachate treatment, biomass fermentation, and anaerobic digestion. The goal of her research is to develop sustainable technologies for the water and waste treatment processes that will reduce the environmental burden, carbon footprint, and greenhouse gas emissions. She is also interested in community outreach to promote environmental awareness.
