Hello Everyone!

UPSA is presenting the Mini-Lecture Series once again this year!

Nine professors from nine different fields of psychology will provide undergraduate students an overview of their fields, current research being conducted in each field, and how to get into graduate school for each program.

This is a TWO-DAY event. See below for more information.

Day 1 - Wednesday, February 3rd at 2:30 PM in P412 Duff Roblin
Presenters are from Developmental Psychology, I/O and Consumer Psychology, School Psychology, and Brain and Cognitive Psychology.

Day 2 - Friday, February 5th at 2:30 PM in P412 Duff Roblin
Presenters are from Social/Personality Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Applied Behaviour Analysis.

We will also be providing pizza and pop after each talk in the psychology lounge, P408 Duff Roblin.

Hi Everyone!

UPSA and the Asper School of Business are proud to present the Industrial/Organizational Psychology Talk: Graduate Research Options in Business for UM Psychology Students this week on Friday, November 6th at 3:00 PM in Room 106 Drake Centre.

Combining your psychology degree with a graduate degree in business will open doors to an ever-growing range of challenging and meaningful careers. In this information session, we will provide an overview of the Asper School of Business research degree programs (MSc and Ph.D.) in management and applied industrial/organizational psychology. We will discuss admission, curriculum, areas of specialization, funding, expenses, facilities and more. We will also cover career options as well as introduce you to some Asper faculty and their current research.

Pizza will be served after the talk.

Hello Everyone!

Coming up next week we have both UPSA's annual Halloween bake sale as well as Dr. Ellery's Clinical Psychology talk!

On Tuesday, October 27th come down to the tunnels at the entrance to Duff Roblin between 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM and grab some goodies all while helping to support your UPSA group. There will be lots of good stuff so don't be shy!

Also next week on Wednesday, October 28th (the day after the bake sale) join us for Dr. Michael Ellery's Clinical Psychology talk where he will be discussing the field of clinical psychology, related careers and the requirements and process of applying to clinical psychology graduate programs. If you are thinking about becoming a clinical psychologist or just want to learn more, then this talk is for you!

The talk will begin at 3:00 PM in P412 Duff Roblin. Refreshments will be served at 2:30 PM in the Psychology lounge (P408) prior to the talk.

UPSA is presenting our very first talk of the school year, "Which Degree Is Right For You?" on Wednesday, October 7th at 3:00 PM in P412 Duff Roblin. Dr. Marian Morry, our department undergraduate head, will be discussing which faculty and which degree is right for you as well as program requirements. She will also be discussing what you can do with your degree and graduate degrees in psychology--overviewing how to apply and describing a CV and the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

Hi all,

UPSA will be having one last information session for this semester on Friday, March 27th, in P412 Duff Roblin at 1:00PM. Dr. Lorna Jakobson will be giving advice to students about getting volunteer/research experience, finding an advisor to supervise your honours thesis, and giving people who want to apply to grad school in 2016 some important tips and deadlines/requirements. Essentially she is providing information that will be helpful before your final year. In addition, 4 undergraduates who have taken the GRE in this past year will be talking to students all about the GRE: what it is, how long to study for it, when to write it, tips/tricks, etc. Students are welcome to ask questions to all of our speakers.

We will serve refreshments prior to the talk. This talk would be beneficial for anyone planning on doing their honours thesis and/or applying to grad school, especially those currently in their third year.

UPSA is presenting the Mini-Lecture Series again this year!

Nine professors from 9 different fields in psychology provide a brief overview of their field and current research. They'll be speaking about how they got where they are and what steps you can start taking as an undergraduate.

This is a 2-day event and see below for more info:

Day 1. Monday February 9 at 2:30 PM in 409 Tier
Presenters are from: Clinical, Cognitive/Neuroscience, Quantitative, and Developmental psychology.
Day 2. Wednesday February 11 at 2:30 PM in P412 Duff Roblin
Presenters are from: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Industrial and Organizational psychology (IO), School psychology, and Social psychology.

These mini-lectures are a great way to quickly learn of the many different areas in psychology. Even if you know what field you're interested in, they can inform you of new areas your field can apply to. Expanding your views also increases the potential profs you can approach for advisors or to work in their lab!

Hi everyone,

UPSA is presenting an All About the Honours Program Information Session on November 17 at 2:30 PM in P412 Duff Roblin.

Undergraduate advisor Michelle Wright will be discussing what an honours degree is, the difference between getting it from Arts vs Science, what an honours thesis/project is, how to get research experience, what an advisor is, their role, and how to find one, and much more.

Also, UPSA members will be discussing some misconceptions commonly held by honours students (year 2-3) about graduate school. If you're thinking about grad school, you'll need to get an honours degree. If you're in the program or thinking about entering, this talk is for you!

Our first event is on October 15th at 1pm in room P412 Duff Roblin. This is our popular Clinical Psychology Talk by Dr. Ellery. Sweater Sale:

UPSA is happy to announce the well awaited psychology department sweater sale!
-The sale runs from February 1st to February 14th!
-American Apparel Unisex Flex Fleece Zip-Up Hoodie Sweaters in the colours black, cranberry, sea blue, and dark heather grey are being sold for $45.00 each.
-Orders can be placed at the UPSA office (P203 Duff Roblin) during office hours or at the General Psychology office (4th floor - P404 Duff Roblin).
-Payments can be made through cash or cheques made out to "Undergraduate Psychology Students' Association."
-The sizes (XS-XXL) of the sweaters generally run a little smaller, so if you are unsure which size to purchase, I would opt for one size up. Size charts and specification sheets (along with measuring tape) will be made available at both locations to ease with sizing. There will also be mock sample sizes available in the general office for display.
-UPSA office hours (P203 Duff Roblin) will be posted on our facebook page and the office door! The Psychology General Office (P404 Duff Roblin) is open from 8:30am-4:30pm, M-F.

Mini Lecture Series!!

Come attend UPSA's Mini Lecture Series. 8 professors from the department have graciously agreed to speak to students on behalf of their particular area in psychology. They will discuss current research being conducted in their field, job opportunities in their respective areas, reason for entering their program of psychology, things that students should be actively involved in while in their undergraduate studies, provide advice to students wanting to pursue graduate school, and much more.

This is a two part event that will take place in room P412 Duff Roblin Building between 2:30pm-4pm. There will be 4 professors presenting each day, giving 15-20 minute presentations on their respected areas of psychology.

-Dr. David Whitcomb will be traveling all the way from the states to be here on October 21st, to talk to students about the various graduate school programs and opportunities just south of the boarder. His lecture will take place in room P412 Duff Roblin at 1:30pm. Hope you all can make it out!


Who doesn't love food..? UPSA is hosting a food fundraiser on October 24th in the Fletcher Argue Tunnels between 9:30am-3pm. First off, we'd like to thank everyone who came and supported our Wine & Cheese event; the turn out was amazing and a lot of undergraduate Psych students got to talk with faculty and meet their peers! Thanks also to the faculty for sticking around and being available to their students. It was a great time!

Dr Vohs's (University of Minnesota) colloquium will be from be at 3:00pm in P412, Duff Roblin. The title is

Colloquium by Krista Uggerslev (Asper School of Business)

"Recruiting through the stages...and beyond."

Abstract: To address where recruiters should spend their recruitment budgets throughout the recruitment process and to guide future recruitment research, I will present the results from a meta-analysis and semi-partial correlations that examined the relative strength and incremental variance accounted for by five categories of recruiting predictors (job characteristics, organizational characteristics, recruiter behaviors, characteristics of the recruitment process, and perceived fit) on applicant attraction across multiple stages of the recruiting process. If you were unable to attend Mike Parent's lecture on graduate school in Psychology, we've included his power point slides for any of you that would like to look them over. (They're very informative!!)

We've also uploaded Rene El-Gabalawy's slides from her presentation earlier in the semester on what you need to do to get into a grad school. She is a clinical graduate student here at the U of M.
