There is only one species of this family found in naturally in Manitoba - Quercus macrocarpa (Bur Oak). There are trees with rough flaky bark and very hard wood, up to 15m in height. The flowers are unisexual and found in slender catkins. The fruit is an acorn resting in a shallow fringed cup.
