This is an ancient family of primitive plants. There is only one genera found in Manitoba (or anywhere for that matter). All of the species are perennial, low, usually trailing plants with short stiff, overlapping leaves. The spores are borne in sporangia on the upper surfaces or on the axils of the leaves on ascending or aerial branches - often aggregated in strobili. The spores are very high in oil content which makes the 'powder' inflammable.
