Lythraceae - Loosestrife family

There is only one species in this family found in Manitoba, Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife). This wetland species was introduced into North America as an ornamental species. It has escaped and caused considerable damage as a weed to many marsh ecosystems across Canada and the United States. It is a perennial herb with opposite or whorled leaves. The inflorescence is 10-40cm ling with foliaceous brcts. The purple flowers are 15-20mm across.
