Myricaceae - Bayberry family

There is only one confirmed species from Manitoba (Myrica gale, or sweet gale). There is a suggestion that Comptonia peregrina is also found but there are no specimens.

Myrica gale is found along stream banks and in swamps on acid soil in the boreal forest. This low shrubby species is hard to mistake due to the strong bay-leaf odor when bruised.
