This family is represented in Manitoba by the genus Plantago. This plants generally have leaves with several prominent longitudinal ribs. The flowers are borne in long narrow spikes, having a 4 lobed calyx, 4 lobed corolla and 2 or 4 stamens. The fruit is a pyxis (capsule).
Plantago maritima has been listed as rare - it is more probably that it is just overlooked as it has been observed growing in many saline areas in the west-central areas of the province.
