Plantaginaceae - Plantain family

This family is represented in Manitoba by the genus Plantago. This plants generally have leaves with several prominent longitudinal ribs. The flowers are borne in long narrow spikes, having a 4 lobed calyx, 4 lobed corolla and 2 or 4 stamens. The fruit is a pyxis (capsule).

Plantago maritima has been listed as rare - it is more probably that it is just overlooked as it has been observed growing in many saline areas in the west-central areas of the province.
