Salicaceae - Willow or Poplar family

These species in this family range from small shrubs (sand bar willow) to large trees (Cottonwood). The leaves are alternate on the stem. Flowers are found in catkins without sepals and petals. Male and female flowers are produced on separate plants.

The genus Salix is particularly difficult to identify to species. There a many species which are quite similar, hybrids are common and various authorities use different classification systems and names.
