This is how the IHHD software works and what you need to do to set it up:
These are the Ladder Rules for playing AW over the Internet.
The following rules shall be subject to change, based on member input.
If you want more information about the dialer software or want to find
players for other modem games you can subscribe to the IHHD mailing list.
If you want to subscribe to this list send email to listproc@cactus.org with
the text "subscribe ihhd
All participants must be able to send and receive email through
the internet to join the ladder. Each participant will need the latest
official release of SVGA Air Warrior, currently version 1.20. Newer beta
releases may be used if agreeable to both participants. Updates can
usually be obtained via anonymous FTP from cactus.org in the
/pub/genie/airwar/PC directory. Because of possible terrain
incompatibilities, 1.20 will be the current minimum version.
Players may opt to dial directly to their opponents or use other
available link-up methods to avoid delays using the IHHD software. All
participants must be able to use IHHD regardless. Challenges and results
of all matches must be passed through the appropriate mail group to the
ladder administrator to be officially recognized. At present this is the
AW Ladder group, which you can subscribe to by sending E-mail to
listproc@cc.umanitoba.ca with the text "subscribe aw-ladder
Individuals who are unable to make the dialer software run on their
systems may also participate if they agree to incur all costs of long
distance phone calls for ALL challenges given and received (recommended for
telephone company employees only!).
The person's name will be added to the bottom of the ladder once
they have successfuly tested AW over the internet with another person.
The top rung has the distinction of being able to issue one
challenge to any open rung in the ladder for each successful defense of
the number one position.
The penalty for not fulfilling a challenge in time is annulment
and for both parties to wait three days before being able to challenge
again. During the three day wait players are required to accept valid
challenges from below. This penalty is also applicable to losing pilots
of a duel.
If a challengee makes no response to a challenger they are liable
to be considered the losers of the challenge with subsequent loss in
position and a penalty (no change in stats).
No immediate back to back challenging of the same pilot will be
allowed. If one loses a match he must either first fly a challenge
against another opponent or wait at least one week before he is eligible
to re-challenge his first opponent.
Pilots can renew their PNG status without loss of rank after one
week provided they are not pending a challenge, otherwise they will
suffer a loss of position. If PNG status is needed due to hardware
problems a duel can be cancelled without penalty or drop in position.
Where the challenger holds the top rung, the winner will be
awarded the number one spot and the loser will hold the challengee's rung.
Providing the match was not void or forfeit/won by default, a
player's stats will be updated accordingly. The loser will face a penalty
the same as mentioned in rule 4. The winning pilot will have a three day
immunity period where they may refuse challenges. The period of
eligibility/immunity will commence on the date of posting of results. By
initiating the challenge the challenger is obligated to post the results
within a day after the fight (a score is sufficient) unless already done
so by the challengee.
Where the winner has attained or defended the top ladder ranking
against a pilot within rungs two to ten they shall have a '+' added to
their handle to indicate their accomplishment. Every five '+' will be
replaced by one asterisk, '*'.
Please note that a victor does not need to be decided in one
session; it is acceptable to spread the sorties out over several nights
if needed so long as they are completed by the void date.
A pilot may take off from any field he likes within his own country.
This includes the country's garages. If both parties agree they may
also fly from neutral airfields to reduce time to engagement.
Lets all have fun with this. No arguing please. If there are rules here
you don't like remember we intend to be very flexible. The ladder is
inteded to be fun and as realistic as possible within the constraints
imposed by the software. Send any additions, comments or suggested changes
to the AW-Ladder group for discussion amongst the other ladder members.
These are the current members of the Ladder.
This is what I need to register you for the ladder:
Those wishing to join the Air Warrior Internet Head to Head Ladder need
to satisfy the hardware and software requirements first before
registering.
The dialer software is crucial and must have been compiled successfully
before you can join the ladder. It can be found at cactus.org via
anon
ftp. It's in the /pub/IHHD directory as dialer1.6.4.shar and
contains
instructions on how to unpack and compile it. If you run into errors the
best place to ask for help is the IHHD mailing list run by Jim Knutson
(the author). See at the end of this letter on how to subscribe.
If you have all of the above working then this is what I need to formally
register you for the ladder:
Make sure you subscribe to the aw-ladder list, as this is where formal
challenges will take place as well as rank updates.
Subscribing to the mailing lists run on cactus.org can be done by sending
E-mail to listproc@cactus.org with no subject and nothing in the body
except for: "subscribe IHHD {your name}" for the IHHD
list
or to listproc@cc.umanitoba.ca with no subject and nothing in the
body aside from: "subscribe aw-ladder {your name}" for the
Ladder list
Addresses to send E-mail to are IHHD@cactus.org or
aw-ladder@cc.umanitoba.ca for the IHHD or AW Ladder list
respectively.

The theatre that pilots will fly in will be announced in the
ladder rankings (posted periodically to the AW-Ladder list). Pilots may
use either the fulltime or halftime versions (but must fly in realtime).
The administrator has the option of designating special months and
place/remove restrictions on plane use. Fuel loads will normally be
unrestricted. Scenarios or "free for all" months may announced.
