Climbing in Winnipeg

Youth For Christ Tower

The Youth For Christ Tower used to be a firehall from the early 1900's until it was converted into a youth centre. As with most old stations the most prominent feature was the lookout tower. This has been modified, turning it into a small albeit challenging climbing wall. Approximate height is 50 feet. Surfaces include a chimney, a modest overhang, cracks, and the ability to lead climb.
How to get there: The YFC Tower is in Winnipeg on 325 Talbot. When traveling N over the Disreali bridge it's the first turn off to your right and about four blocks E. The telephone number to arrange bookings is 669-4205. Belayers need to be certified and familiar with YFC equipment. Supplies include a limited number of climbing shoes and harnesses, and a rope and anchor system. A maximum of two people can climb at the same time.

The tower offers a good test of flexibility and brute strength for the novice and intermediate climber. Intelligence is not always a requirement, although you should always wear a safety rope and harness when climbing, no exceptions. Unless you've somehow learned to fly on your own power you'll understand the expression "Gravity is a harsh mistress on PMS."
