In 2010, our work moved us north to the Phongola River Basin which borders Swaziland and Mozambique to the north. In the Upper Basin we worked with several potters, including Peni Gumbi in the Similane Traditional Authority, and a large number of potters from the Mathenjwa Traditional Authority located west of the Ndumo Game Reserve. Production in the two areas is strikingly different. Potters in Similane TA make pottery much like other Zulus further south, but potters in the Mathenjwa TA use many production techniques used by Tsonga speakers in Mozambique, demonstrating the historically known movement of people and ideas across the Phongola (Mputo) River.
