COLD WATER SURVIVAL GROUP

Mission Statement:

This group focuses on cold water survival and encompasses research in a broad spectrum from human physiology, to clothing and equipment research and development, to public safety education and policy.

Group Description:

The Cold Water Survival Group is studying the broad question of safety and survival system for off-shore activities [ie., industrial (oil exploration); commercial (fishing); and recreational]. This group is planning a 4-5 year program of research and development looking at areas of product development, human physiology, computer modeling of human thermal responses, testing on a thermal manikin and field testing in the ocean.

The specific goals of the group are to:

  1. improve on or create new methods for prediction of human survival time (with computer modeling or thermal manikin testing) in various clothing/survival suit ensembles, sea conditions and water conditions;
  2. create a predictive tool for the rewarming process of cold stressed victims;
  3. describe the physical effects of various wave heights on convective and conductive heat loss through water tight and non-water tight clothing ensembles;
  4. improve testing procedures, as well as standards and regulations for new survival products; and;
  5. based on the results of this work, to produce improved survival products.
