March 16, 1995

Executives Present: Tom Tessier, Patrick Wong, Michael Markmann, Paula Ehn.

Meeting called to order at 6:10pm in 207 University Centre.

Introductions of all present took place.

1. Correspondence

A letter was received from Brian Murata, SiGPAC Chairman, stating that UMARS has be granted full service status.

1. President's Address given by Tom Tessier

i. Campus Crimewatch program with the Campus Police was launched yesterday with 8 UMARS members taking part. In the brief ceremony, members signed a Charter of Responsibilities which was co-signed by Don Peters, the Chief Constable of the Campus Police and a Justice of Peace/ Commissioner of Oaths in and for the Province of Manitoba. Also attending were the Honourable Rosemary Vodre, Minister of Justice for Manitoba and President Naimark. The event was chaired by Rolland Penner, Dean of Law. On hand at the meeting were a few of the results of the media circus that occurred such as the official press release, the video of CKND news and various newspaper articles. The spot on CBC radio news was not presented.

2. Campus Crimewatch Liaison Report given by Craig Thomasson

Craig will be meeting up with Constable Terry Krenz shortly to formalize and arrange a brief training course for the Campus Crimewatch volunteers. More information will be available at the next meeting.

3. Vice-President's Report given by Patrick Wong

None.

4. Secretary/Treasurer's Report given by Paula Ehn

i. As of the end of February the club had $1050.64 in the bank plus a $20 petty cash is setup. There is still the invoice for the radio course outstanding and it will be paid as soon as we receive it. This invoice should be for about $400. Also there are still some proceeds from the radio course that need to be collected from Dr. Kinsner.

4. Technical Manager's Report given by Michael Markmann

i. The repeater is running as usual.
ii. The packet-internet gateway is temporarily running the operating system of DOS and the packet software JNOS. This radical change was to allow the sysops time to fix crucial security breaches in the WAMPES software. These alterations to WAMPES may take up to a year to fully implement and test. This temporary change means that no members of UMARS will be able to telnet to their UNIX accounts from the gateway as was being previously performed. This will hopefully be only a very short term inconvenience until full telnet abilities are set up on the club's 286 computer.
ii. An autopatch has been graciously loaned to the club by Brad Ruptash, VE4BAR, to see if the autopatch will meet the club's needs. Upon installation and full testing of the autopatch hooked into the repeater and phone line at the club, the purchase of the autopatch will be forthcoming.

Other Business

i. Harry Lobo requested communications for March 21, 1994 in honour of International Day for the Elimination of Racism. Harry was asked to find out more information on what type of communications was needed. Harry said he would relay via e-mail a contact name for the event.
ii. Because the door of the club room has been found open on two separate occasions by night security over the past two months and because Paula Ehn found the window of the club room open yesterday morning, it was suggested that the door combination should be changed. All agreed and the combination was agreed upon and changed.
iii.Michael Markmann formally proposed that the club should purchase two GE radios for $50 each. One radio would be used to replace the existing home-made transmitter and receiver boards presently used in the repeater and the other would be a spare radio. It was noted that these radios may require a lot of time, effort and expense to get them running at peak performance. Tom Tessier suggested that the purchase of the radios should be tabled until such time as the outcome of the Engineering Endowment Fund request for repeater funding is known. All agreed and motion was tabled.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:14pm.

A presentation of Slow Scan TV and Weather Faxes was given by Tom Tessier.
