Operating amateur radio requires a licence issued to a person by the Government of Canada, after a successful examination of the person's basic qualifications. The exam can be taken either after a self-study period, or by taking a course. The basic licence allows you to communicate on many amateur radio bands. Thus, the basic amateur radio qualifications course can be your ticket to the vast universe of amateur radio.
It is probably easier to take a course from an experience amateur radio operator. This may lead not only to knowledge, but also operating experience.
The course includes seven sessions, with one session per week, given in the evening to accommodate students' schedules. After a one-month study break, the final exam takes place, also during an evening session. No additional fee is charged for the exam.
Each session covers parts of the core material (regulations, theory, practice).
Each session is also followed by practical considerations (demos).
The course is offered in one of the rooms in the Engineering and Information Technology Complex, EITC, University of Manitoba, Fort Gary Campus.
Dr. W. Kinsner, VE4WK, has been presenting the course to UMARS for the last 20 years or so. At the end of the course, he also gives the exam on behalf of Industry Canada, as its Accredited Examiner.
The instructor will use his course material. Other material will be downloaded from Industry Canada.
The course requires a small fee, which includes the examination fee. Since this offer applies only to members of UMARS, the also fee includes one year's membership dues to UMARS.
A regular course fee is much higher. This special offer is VE4WK's service to UMARS.
The registration and payment of the fee is done in person before the first session.
