EMCOR Student Awards

As members of the EMCOR (Emotion, Motivation, and Control Research) laboratory, students conduct thesis projects on topics funded by grants focusing on metacognitive, affective, and motivational processes. I’ve supervised over 100 Honours, Masters, and PhD theses, in addition to serving as a member of many other students’ theses committees. In recognizing my graduate teaching and thesis supervision duties, I received the University of Manitoba Graduate Students Association Teaching Award (1990). Among the 18+ PhD dissertation theses I supervised, several won outstanding dissertation awards from the University of Manitoba (Faculty of Graduate Studies), Canadian Psychological Association, Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education, and American Educational Research Association.

The EMCOR laboratory offers students a “window on the world” in professional contacts and career development by providing opportunities to develop as skilled researchers and “next-generation” scientists. For example, Bernard Weiner (UCLA) is a leading social cognition theorist in motivation science; Jutta Heckhausen (University of California-Irvine) is acclaimed for her motivation theory of lifespan development; Reinhard Pekrun (University of Munich) is acknowledged for his theory of emotions. In pursuing these opportunities, 20 students have won postdoctoral awards from local, national and international agencies that include: eight from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada; four from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; three from the Manitoba Health Research Council; two from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation; and one from the Killam Foundation.

In Canada, students have pursued postdoctoral fellowships at Concordia University, the University of Alberta, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Québec-Laval; in the USA, at UCLA, the University of California-Irvine, and Yale University; and, in Germany, the University of Munich, University of Konstanz, the University of Nürnberg, among others. Following postdoctoral training, academic appointments have been offered by the University of Alberta, the University of Manitoba, McGill University, the University of Toronto, and York University in Canada; and, in the USA, Idaho State University, the University of Maryland, North Dakota State University, and the University of North Dakota.

As members of the EMCOR laboratory, students have conducted research for their theses through grant-funded support to me and Judith G. Chipperfield from national and international agencies on a variety of topics involving metacognitive, affective, and motivational processes. The accomplishments below are a selection of academic awards and fellowships they received while associated with the EMCOR laboratory and thereafter.
