• Is ethanol present in Distillate 1 or 2?

  Ethanol is present in Distillate number 2, the yeast culture after fermentation of glucose to alcohol. (see the yellow precipitate on the bottom of Tube 4)

• Where did the ethanol come from?

  The ethanol was produced by yeast cells undergoing fermentation

• What is the purpose of tubes 1 and 2?

  Tube 1 was a negative control to show what a negative result looks like. Tube 2 was a positive control to show what a positive result looks like
