COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. To advance your understanding of the techniques and terminology of film.
2. To introduce films outside the normal range of student interest.
3. To acquaint the student with the basics of film history.
4. To encourage creative and reflective responses to films rather than simple judgmental reactions.
1. Full attendance at screenings (plus 5 minutes) and lectures (roll will be taken)
2. Attention to films, readings, classes.
3. No talking, eating or drinking in screenings or classes.
4. Assignments:
a) pop quizzes 30%
b) short paper (1500-2000 words) 30% (end of February)
c) final exam or approved option 40% (exam period)

Textbook: The Films of Steven Spielberg edited by Charles Silet, plus
additional essays.
1. Papers must be typed and double spaced. PROOF-READ EVERYTHING and engage your computer’s spell-check
2. Do not enclose papers in folders, and especially not those irritating plastic see-through covers!!!
3. Proposals for optional assignments must be submitted in writing. Students who do not meet deadlines for assignments or miss more than three classes may NOT choose the optional assignment.
4. If you miss a class, it is up to you to get the notes on work you missed. I do not repeat lectures, but I will assist those who have legitimate excuses. If you miss a quiz, you will get a zero.
1. Originality and insightfulness in observation and thought.
2. Thoroughness and attention to details in sustaining general ideas.
3. Logical organization & coherent development of an argument.
4. Grammar that is noticeably deficient will result in a lower grade.

Late Papers: will result in the loss of ˝ of a grade per week (An “A” becomes a “B+”, etc.).
NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER GRADED PAPERS ARE RETURNED.
Assignments/papers more than one (1) week late will be graded but no comments will be provided.

The common penalty in the Faculty of Arts for plagiarism in a written assignment, test or examination is a grade of “F” for the course. For the most serious acts of plagiarism, such as the purchase of an essay or cheating on a test or examination, the penalty can also include suspension for a period up to five (5) years from registration in courses taught in a particular department in the Faculty of Arts or from all courses taught in the Faculty. The Faculty also reserves the right to submit student work that is suspected of being plagiarized to internet sites designed to detect plagiarism.
