FLOW PATTERNS OF COHESIVE MATERIALS IN STORAGE BINS
Research team: Q. Zhang, M.G. Britton, Graduate students

Computer image processing techniques are used to measure flow patterns of cohesive materials in bins with inserts. Tests are conducted using a model bin 2.4 m high, with a rectangular cross-section 1.0 m by 0.4 m. The model bin is made of clear plexiglass so that material movements can be recorded by video cameras. Video images are then digitized and analyzed using a computer image processing unit to determine material flow patterns. Triangular bin inserts are used in tests. Different insert size, and mounting methods and locations are studied.
