Welcome to Freer/Frere Family Research. Hopefully, it can be a locus for those wishing to pursue the history of the FREER surname and related families throughout the world and assist in dialogue and exchange of data and information. Freer Families can be found throughout the world in Australia, Barbados, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Chile, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Scotland, South Africa, Switzerland, United States and Vietnam. If you know of any places please let me know so I can add them to the list. According to a recently published book on Freers of the World (The World Book of Freers by Halbert's Family Heritage [World Book, Inc.], there are over 3,279 Freer Families (I would suggest more since I have found Freers in places they do not list). The latest edition of the Halbert's Book on the Freers of the World just came out in 1998.

New Book The Zulu and the Raj: The Life of Sir Bartle Frere by Damian O"Connor just released. Limited copies can be obtained either through Damian or John Frere Scott for 15 pounds or $25.00 US plus postage.

I would like to dedicate this Freer Genealogy Web site to my father Burton S. Freer and to all those Freers who came before us that have made this a proud name to be associated with. My father is the one who is working hard behind the scenes and shares his wealth of compiling their family tree in a windows environment on a PC computer. My hat is off to him for attempting such a brave task which many half his age would not try. He is a hard act to follow. There are not too many 95 year olds who are compiling their family tree in a windows environment on a PC computer. There are many others behind the scene who help to construct this web site and without them there would be much less information here to share with others. One of these individuals is Peggy Routley. She has shared much information on the Freers in Canada which took her many years to compile. Thank-you Peggy!! Also thanks to the late Ron Freer, John H. Freer, Jennie Spencer (nee: Freer), Opal Spencer Freer, Alice Henneberry (nee:Freer) and the late Terri Wilson (nee:Freer) who are my main sources for the Freers in the U.S.A. Jennie is our expert in Heraldry which she shares openly. We only need to listen to her!! Nancy Deviney of Freer Texas Chamber of Commerce has been most helpful regarding information on Freer, Texas. Others who have been of great assistance include Eugenia (nee Freer) Brown, Richard Hollier of New Zealand, Alan Rickson of England, A.J.M. (Andy) Freer and most recently John Frere Scott and Geoff Freer in England and Christian Frère of France who have given significant contributions. I would like to give a special thanks to the staff of the Strathroy Middlesex Museum, who were gracious (not to mention patient!) enough to allow us to take Colonel Arthur William Wellington Freear's (Freer) artifacts out of the display cases and photograph them during the summer of 1997 and 2007. It was much appreciated.

TIDBITS: Did you know that there are at least three towns in England with the name FREER as street names. I was told the one name was after a William Freer who is probably one of the Blaby Freers since the one town with a FREER Street name is Leicester. Another is FREER Street in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. It is interesting that there is also a road that crosses over Interstate 94 called Freer near Chelsea, Michigan. There is also a Frere Street in London named after Bartle Frere next to the Kandahar and Kabul Roads as well as a Mount Bartle Frere in South Africa and a Frere Town in Kenya.
