The following species list was made as part of a botanical walk done for the Manitoba Naturalists - July 18, 2000.More information about La Barriere Park can be found through the City of Winnipeg La Barriere Park website page. The city naturalist has also provided a species list of part of the park.
The short walk followed the trails found on the the west side of the La Salle river - over the foot bridge. With the extensive rain that fell over the months of June and July the level of the La Salle river was very high setting back much of the vegetation near the river bank. The trails were very wet and muddy, but still passable. Mosquitoes were out in abundance. Four hardy souls came out and braved the water, mud and mosquitoes.
The following species were observed during the walk. These are in alphabetical order, names are given in Latin mostly following those used in "Budd's Flora of The Canadian Prairie Provinces" © 1979 Agriculture Canada. This list does not represent all of the species found in La Barriere Park, but a sample observed while walking through the park on the 17th and 18th of July, 2000. A number of genera (Aster, Solidago, Carex) were not in flower so an identification could not be made to species. Time was not spent to identify small plants such as those found in Arenaria or Stellaria genera.
