Economic Integration of Canadian Immigrants: (with Wayne Simpson)

There is evidence that immigrants face disadvantage in the labour market and that immigrants to Canada are increasingly visible minorities. In recent research (Hum and Simpson, 1999), we find no evidence of disadvantage in labour market earnings for visible minorities who are native born once immigration circumstances (especially years since immigration to Canada and age at immigration) are taken into accounted. For visible minority members who are immigrants, however, there is evidence of disadvantage. Additionally, we find that wage growth has not been faster for immigrations of late, thereby implyingn that integration by recent immigrants has been largely absent.

Research is ongoing concerning different aspects of the economic intergration experience of immigrants, including the adjustment of the  second generation, the retirement prospects of elderly immigrants, the health experience of immigrants, and other topics.

Status: published journal articles and others in progress.
