Meet Sandy, our four-legged (!!) big sand tiger beetle mascot! Make sure to give Sandy a shout if you would like to know more about insects (like learning about the fact they actually have six legs!)

The members of the ESM regularly make presentations for kids of all ages. They go to schools, daycare centres or they welcome you to the Department of Entomology at the University of Manitoba. Presentations vary according to your needs, but often include live insects, boxed specimens from Manitoba and around the world, and a talk with a slideshow. The ESM's Youth Encouragement & Public Education Committee (YE) has at all times any of these live insects: Madagascar hissing cockroaches, giant Brazilian cockroaches, American cockroaches, Vietnamese stick insects, assassin bugs, darkling beetles, praying mantises, giant prickly stick insects, tarantulas and scorpions (can you spot the intruders in this list?).

Of course you will be disgusted when first offered to hold one of these six-legged folks, but as Sandy puts it: "Next thing you know, you'll want to bring them home and get yourself a bug cage and whatever else you'd need to keep them happy!" Yes, Sandy as seen many kids become fascinated by the slow-moving, yet determined stick insects or the calm grasp of the Madagascar hissing cockroaches.

You will thank yourself for having us tell you all about the wonderful insect world. In 2009, more than 30 groups took advantage of the program. Over 2000 kids, young and old, realized how fun insects can be! Get a hold of Sandy through our committee chair. We will make sure the YE mascot gets your message and stops by your place for a presentation.

"See you soon!!"
- Sandy
